COMMODORE Sec: 14
Theme: TRANSFORMER/IBM DRIVE

Title: A BRIEF REPORT
----
Due to the generosity of a friend, tonite I have an Amiga 5.25" IBM PC format
disk drive attached to my Amiga (I get to roadtest it for a few days).
I am still running a version of the Amiga Transformer which I am TOLD is
version 3.7 Beta, however nowhere on the software is that number indicated
and in fact when it loads, the DOS screen says version 1.0... my friend
forgot to bring the disk that came with this drive, so I cannot report
on any "improvements" in the AT which comes packed with the drive.
I can tell you this, however, rumors of software that would NOT run on
the AT are highly exaggerated.
First of all, the new Transformer comes packed with a little white
binder (which I do have near me). Inside the binder is the following
card: (quote)
Run these popular programs developed for the IBM (r) PC:
Amiga transformer Version 1.0 is an entry level utility permitting the
following programs t
o run on the Amiga PC using MS-DOS or PC-DOS 2.1:
Dbase III vers 1.1
Lotus 1-2-3 vers 1.A
Multiplan vers 1.2
Multimate vers 3.3
Wordperfect vers 4.0
BPI Gen. Ledger/Accts payable/receivagble version c.13
Dollars & Sense vers 2.0
IBM Writing Asst. vers 1.01
IBM filing asst vers 1.0
PFS Report vers b
PFS file vers b
(all the above program names are registered trademarks of their various
publishers)
The card goes on:
The Amiga Tranformer is not warranted for use with software developed
for computers claimedd or considered to be compatible with the IBM PC.
No claim is made regarding the extent of compatibility of the Version 1.0
Amiga Transformer with the IBM PC, except for use of the above
programs. See reverse side for complete trademark info.
The typical execution time for dBASE III will be 2-4 times longer on
the Amiga than on the IBM PC. Serial printers are not supported in
this version of the Amiga Transformer.
End of quote.
The book goes on to describe how to physically connect your 5.25" drive,
and how to load, configure, and use the Transformer. Here is the
STAT page entitled "What the Amiga Transformer Emulates" :
. use of all IBM equivalnet keys on the Amiga kybd
. up to 640K of memory
. use of the Amiga parallel port as LPT1
. use of the Amiga serial port as COM1
. use of 3.5 inch disk drives for software and data storage in 40 track
format
. use of 5.25 in disk drives for reading/writing standard PC Dos
format disks
. 80 col monochrome video mode (sorry folks, no color/sound/graphics yet!)
. all DOS and BIOS interrupts
. direct r/w to video memory
. direct control of all special chips such as video, interrupts, disk
and serial and parallel ports.
The manual then goes on to describe "Required Reading" to learn about
PC/MS-DOS, how to hook up drives, printers, modems, (the drive has its
own AC power cord and must be "last in the chain" of drives)..how to
use AT Preferences, how to set up memory (the book mentions that a min.
of 512K is a requirement but the Transformer will recognize addtl
memory addons and allow as much as 640K for PC Dos and applications)
A mention is made of the "attachments menu" and states that the Bell
volume, pitch, mouse, light pen, and joystick will NOT work on this
version of the AT.
Then there comes a keyboard map, pin assignments, and a glossary.
Now here's some good news: I can report to you that the following software
(all trademarkd names from their various publishers) WILL DEFINITELY
run under the 1.0 AT (and wer not listed in the AT book)...
Crosstalk XVI 3.3 and 3.5
Sidekick 1.0 (yes, it WORKS!!)
The Norton Utilities (all modules)
IBM Personal Editor
Q-Modem (a very powerful p/d terminal program - shareware status)
SuperKey
Lettrix (a fantastic ram-resident printer/font utility that I'll write
And MANY other small shareware/freeware/public domain programs and
utilities, too numerous to mention here.
It's sort of a hit-or-miss proposition, learning what will and what will
NOT run under the AT. but the List is MUCH longer than C-Amiga will
tell you about (or rather did tell you about).
Unfortunately, although my modem connects thru the various term programs
at 1200 baud, the speed of transmission is no better than 300 baud
under this 1.0 AT. Crosstalk 3.3 is still the fastest of the term
programs I've tried yet, but no way will it run at a full 1200 baud to
the screen.
Wordstar runs, but very very slowly, I'll try the PC Personal Editor later
and hopefully that will give me some text editing capabilities.
By the way, I tried to load original disks of PFS Write and the new
PFS Write/Enhanced (with the spell check ram resident) and neither
would load... these are protected disks.. apparently the 5.25 Amiga drive
had some troubles reading the protection as all I got were
"Error, Retry or Ignore" over and over.
Well, that's enough for now, this should give you some idea of the
capabilities here. I've more software to try out (Dos 3.0, and other utilities) and will have more
details later.
Rgds, Harv
